Car batteries

Welcome to the Preston Tyre Bay information page about vehicle batteries.

The primary purpose of the car battery (starter battery) is to provide the starter with sufficient electrical power to start the engine of a car. While driving, the car battery is charged by the alternator when it generates more power than is needed by other consumers.

In modern vehicles - especially cars in the upper and luxury class, which have many assistance systems, automatic start-stop and other power consumers on board - the car battery is particularly stressed. It requires a correspondingly high capacity (Ah) and must deliver reliable power even at low temperatures. If it does not do that, start-up assistance might be necessary. Car batteries are almost exclusively operated in onboard networks with 12-volt voltage (24V for trucks). Due to the increasing demands on car batteries, the automotive industry has been considering for some time now to operate the onboard systems of passenger cars with 24V or 48V in the future. But it is not ready yet.

Important information about car batteries:

Battery voltage: sstated in volts (V). Normal cars require 12V batteries.

Battery capacity: Amperage hours (Ah). Depending on the car between about 30 Ah (small car) and 120 Ah or more (upper/luxury class).

Battery construction: liquid battery (wet cell), VRLA battery (fleece/ gel battery)

Battery cold start current (CCA): Amps (A). The cold start current (also cold test current EN) is the decisive factor for a good starting ability. It is the amount of current that a battery can deliver at -17.8 ° C for 30 seconds until the battery voltage falls below a usable level.

Battery reserve capacity: specified in minutes (min). The car battery maintains the vehicle's electrical system when the alternator fails. The reserve capacity indicates how long the battery can supply enough power without falling below the voltage level that the car needs. New ETN car batteries have a so-called ETN (European Type Number). It contains rated voltage, capacity, cold-start current, design and position of the poles. Batteries with the same ETN can be exchanged without restriction. Many products also contain information on which other types can be used (for example, according to the old DIN standard).

Battery Dimensions: Specified as Length x Width x Height in Millimetres.

Battery bottom rails: For safety reasons, batteries must not be operated loosely in the car/engine compartment. They are attached to floor strips, which are available in different versions (B1, B3, B13, etc.). If you are unsure, please come to see us. We will check which battery is right for your vehicle. We can also offer you different, quality batteries for every budget - and of course, we can fit the battery for you, so you don't need to worry.

10 Tips: How the car battery lasts longer

Modern car batteries are mostly maintenance-free. Nevertheless, as a motorist, you can do a lot to extend the life of the battery. This will not only save your nerves (cold start in winter) but also save money.

  • Switch on large consumers of electricity (music system, high beam, etc.) only when the engine is running.
  • On a new car battery, grease the poles with battery fat (acid-free grease). We do this for all our customers automatically.
  • Read the owner's manual of your vehicle before removing or installing the battery as alarm systems, radios and control units must be partially re-initialised when changing the battery. (Caution: alarm systems are extremely loud and can damage your hearing if they are activated with an open hood near the ears due to a wrong initialisation)
  • If the battery is completely "dead", have the alternator, controller and wiring inspected in our workshop, or a new battery could be damaged.
  • If the battery is completely "dead", have the alternator, controller and wiring inspected in our workshop, or a new battery could be damaged.
  • If your battery is deeply discharged, you can first try to regenerate it with a suitable charger.
  • When re-starting (with the help of another vehicle), you must pay attention to the correct order of the cable connections. Do not connect the earthing cable to the negative pole of the empty battery but a suitable motor or body part so that the strong current flow prevents the development of explosive gases in the battery.
  • Avoid electrostatic charging of the battery casing (Pay attention to the choice of the cleaning cloth).
  • It is best to use gloves when handling the car battery to avoid injury from leaking battery acid.
  • Do not tilt the battery for a long period. Otherwise corrosive battery acid may escape.
  • Never drop the battery! If it happened, replace it with a new battery.

You see, it's actually not that easy to just buy and fit a new battery at home.

Don't take the stress. We do it all for you:

  • Check the correct size
  • Remove your vehicle's old battery
  • Dispose of the old battery correctly in order to protect the environment
  • Fit your new battery

It won't take long, and everything will be done for you safely and at a very good price.
